We at WDB Trust remember with deep respect and gratitude, the life and legacy of Gertrude Shope — a stalwart of South Africa’s liberation movement, a fierce advocate for women’s rights, and a treasured patron of our organisation.
Born on 15 August 1925, Ma Shope’s life was defined by courage, clarity of purpose, and a lifelong commitment to the empowerment of African women. From her early work as a teacher to her pivotal role in the ANC Women’s League, her contributions helped shape South Africa’s path toward democracy and gender equality.
Her years in exile, her return to serve in the first democratic Parliament, and her continued leadership into her later years remain a powerful testament to her vision and resilience. As our patron, she stood not only as a symbol of what has been achieved — but as a guiding light for the work we still ahead.
“Freedom cannot be achieved unless the women have been emancipated.”
Gertrude Shope

We honour her memory, celebrate her life, and commit to carrying forward the principles she lived by: freedom, justice, dignity, and the full liberation of women.
Rest in power, Mam Shope. Your spirit lives on in all of us.
